No, you can't update the source document. You're obviously thinking in terms of a stylesheet being executed sequentially, but that's not the way the language is defined. If it were possible to mark a node, there would be no way of knowing whether the mark is read before or after it is written! It's best to describe the problem you are trying to solve, since you are going to have to adopt a different approach.
