Not so silly. Except it's XPath, not XSLT.
@ = attribute:: = attribute axis.
So @fred means attribute named fred

. = context node (or context item in XSLT 2.0) - that's the item that
is the current subject of apply-templates or for-each in XSLT .

$ = variable reference, so $fred is the value of the variable (or
parameter) named fred.
