Urgent help required Node.getLocalName()

Hello List,
           I need urgent help regarding getLocalName()
of Node. getLocalName() returns me null. I need this
method to return me not a null value. Is there any way
I cann change the local name so that I can get not
null. I am manipulating a large document. 
This is an urgent help.
