  basically trying to find a way of doing this:

  <xsl:call-template name="concat(contentFieldElement, '_', contentFieldStyle)" />

why do you want to use named templates?

Does the outline that I posted not do more or less what you need?

that uses matching templates and just uses this 
concat(contentFieldElement, '_', contentFieldStyle)"
string as needed within the template.
