xsl image tag
You don't have an img tag in your feed (and so no img element node in
your input tree. You just have teh characters < i m g

I gather this kind of crippled input is typical in RSS and you probably
can't change your feed, in which case XSLT 1 isn't really ideal for the
job as it's designed to handle element markup not plain text, however

<xsl:template match="description[contains(.,'img')]">
<xsl:value-of
select="substring-before(substring-after(.,'src="'),'"')"/>
</xsl:template>

may do the job in simple cases.
