Any testing you need to do will have to treat the attribute as a string value, and decode what you want from that string, which includes converting the string to a number if you need to. I'm not at all sure what you are asking for when you ask about a bit being set ... I associate that with bits of a byte or word expressed typically in decimal or hex.
