you want to know if there is no B node between the current node and the
next A?

That's the same as saying you want the next A-or-B node to be an A which
is

test="following-sibling::*[self::A or self::B][1][self::A]"

as always with these things, using keys a la muenchian grouping would
make it  more efficient, but make it work first.
