The Lynx idea is way cool, and I always liked Netscape's Save As .txt well enough (I should look and see how Moz is doing it), but the OP did say "platform independent". Much depends on what this means. Another question is how easily the resulting text format can be fine tuned (line ends, indents, inline markup, header formatting etc.) and whether such tuning is needed.
