Yes Ken. perfect. 
I wonder why I always interpret / as being 'down-tree' :-) as apposed
to your use, where it continues in the ancestor axis?

   <xsl:for-each select=".//*[not(self::rng:choice)]//rng:ref">
was working too, looking in the other direction.
Invert the not for the other kind!
