Of course you can have xsl:variable inside a for-each (as I showed) it isn't re-assigning the value of a variable just definining a new variable with the same name. But you really don't want to use position() with select="@*" you have <row column1="value" column3="value"></row> so <xsl:for-each select="@*"> will process two nodes column1 and column3 but you could run the stylesheet once and column1 will be position()=1 and column3 will be position()=2 then you could run the same source and same stylesheet again with no changes and column1 will be position()=2 and column3 will be position()=1 The order in which the attributes are reported by the XML parser is __arbitrary__ and not guaranteed to be consistent from run to run.
