..thats overly complicated isn't it? Why not just fill in the values:
<xsl:template match="/">
<html>
<head>
<script>
var count = <xsl:value-of select="count(//whatever)"/>;<xsl:text/>
</script>
</head>
</html>
</xsl:template>
Gives:
<script>
var count = n;
</script>
