Had another look at it. Given the part of the solution I already provided:
<xsl:template match="day">
...
<xsl:apply-templates select="ext:node-set($vacts)/*">
<xsl:sort select="hits" data-type="number" order="descending" />
</xsl:apply-templates>
</xsl:template>
<xsl:template match="activity[hits > 0]">
<xsl:value-of select="@name" />
<b><xsl:value-of select="hits" /></b>
</xsl:template>
will get your output in the desired order.
