That'll teach me to double check things before I post!  My
solution was just plain wrong (sorry, long day).

> select="count(preceding-sibling::*/@*[not(name()='trade')])"/>

Does using preceding-sibling mean that the introduction of other elements
or attributes will require adjustment of the code?  I'm finding it very
hard to adjust to a no-side-effect language.
