you don't want // there just / unless you really want to search the
entire document to arbitrary depth looking for all the SAVEIdesas
elemnts

then you have
    <xsl:sort select="*[name()=$param1]"/>
so sorting on the children of the specified name but your status element
isn't a child oits a grandchild so you need
    <xsl:sort select="(*|status_history/*)[name()=$param1]"/>
