Thanks for your advice.

Yes, we understand that it is bad form to have the XML document embedded in
the CDATA, but unfortunately that's the way it exists in the 4-year-old data
we're mining.

We're using Xalan, so I think I'll be able to call a Java extension that
takes the string as input, strips off the XML header, and then turns the
remaining string into an XML node that gets returned to the transformer.
