I'm trying to make a linear gradient using SVG inside XSL-FO. I am using FOP version 0.20.5.

SVG gradients are not supported in FOP 0.20.5. You have to use the development version of FOP if you want to have this in embedded SVG, which unfortunately isn't anywhere near a release yet (read: has deficiencies). Alternative approaches: - Render the SVG into a bitmap image (for example using Batik), and use the bitmapp image in the FO. - Render the SVG into a PDF using the Batik PDF transcoder, render your FO into PDF using a similar SVG as placeholder, and merge the two PDF using a third party tool.
