I am using html as my output.

HTML uses SGML conventions where, as David points out, </link> and </img> must not be present.

I want closed tags because I'm trying to be compliant to the emerging standards by using xhtml.

Then your document element *cannot* be "h","t","m","l", and must be "x","h","t","m","l" and you have to use XML conventions.

Being compliant doesn't allow you to mix and match one convention in one place and a different convention in a different place. If your output is XHTML, then you will need to use the XML conventions.

I notice now that I forgot my xmlns which might have something to do with the problem.

XSLT 1.0 processors know nothing of XHTML in the result tree, so forgetting the namespace has nothing to do with any problems using the XSLT processor.

You would have problems downstream processing the data when using those processors that are expecting to receive XHTML.

Would anyone know how I can specify a DTD for my output using XSL? That was one thing I couldn't figure out.

<xsl:output doctype-system=".place.URI.here."/>

I hope this helps.
