My text is usually a long single word.
I'm using FOP 0.20.5

That's a well known problem. Actually, the spec is vague on
what should happen if the processor is told to wrap text but
not given a proper opportunity.
The solution is to insert zero width (breaking) spaces into
the word, preferably at places you think would make a good
line break.
