Reduced to answering my own questions.  :p

In case anyone else runs into the same thing, what I needed to do was
this: 

<xsl:value-of select='normalize-space($content)'
disable-output-escaping='yes' />
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
                nrkn
