The XSL FAQ <http://www.dpawson.co.uk/xsl/xslfaq.html>, in particular <http://www.dpawson.co.uk/xsl/sect2/break.html#d2323e76>. Just copy Jeni's template and use it in your stylesheet with

  <td>
    <xsl:call-template name="substitute">
      <xsl:with-param name="string" select="@name" />
    </xsl:call-template>
  </td>
