beware when we tried this we found many clients/serves have limits on the
length of URL that they can handle which means that you will only be
able to handle small mathml expressions.

yes you'll see that the pmathml.xsl stylesheet available at
http://www.w3.org/mathML/XSL
does exactly that (well it sticks the mathml in an applet parameter
attribute rather than an img src attribute, but its the same thing)
