Yes, it has been answered many many times, though not recently. The
answer is that you don't: XSLT is a functional language, it is
side-effect free, and does not have an assignment statement.

The best thing is to show us what transformation you are trying to
perform, and someone, with luck, will show you how to write it in a
functional style.

It takes a bit of getting used to programming in this way, but most
people, once they get up the learning curve, recognize that they are
writing better programs as a result.
