Thanks again to David Carlisle (etc.),

unparsed-entity-uri() was just what I needed - didn't
even know it existed.

Of course it is a bit silly the files being pointed to
(complete books of St Jerome's Vulgate in XML) being unparsed
since they get parsed as soon as I use the document() function
to pull out particular verses/bits-of-verses.
