tranformation to achieve his goal.
The "XSLT identity transform" is well-documented in the archives of list and elsewhere (including in the XSLT Recommendation). I heartily assent to Charles' verdict that the d-o-e thing is ugly here. It's worse than that. Newbies should be on notice that d-o-e will get you into trouble, not only in application, but also with old-timers who deride you and your code. Disable-output-escaping is like the drill in the electrician's toolbox: you use it, with apologies, only on screws that are totally stripped.
