You could use a stopwatch... It depends on which system you are using, but in any case it is likely to be negligible as they may even produce the same compiled version of the stylesheet, so have identical runn time performance. Compared to things like using keys instead of // which can make orders of magnitude time differences, using or not using xsl:attribute isn't an issue.
