You cannot use variables like this with select
attribute of xsl:sort
You have to resort to something like
<xsl:for-each select="something/*[name() =
$firstValue]">
<xsl:sort select="." order="{$ord}"/>
<xsl:value-of .. (display data)
<xsl:value-of .. (display data)
</xsl:for-each>
