msxml xpath nothing
  <xsl:value-of select="child::*[2][name()='arg']"/>

(which is better written as

<xsl:value-of select="child::*[2][self::arg]"/>
as that is more robust in the face of namespaces)

selects the second element if it is an arg, and nothing otherwise

  <xsl:value-of select="child::arg[2]"/>

selects the second arg (if there are two or more) and nothing otherwise.
