here are the characters in question that are the most likely culprits,

Space &#32; (hexadecimal &#x20;) 
Carriage return &#13; (&#xD;) 
Tab &#9; (&#x9;) 
Line feed (newline) &#10; (&#xA;) 

so try this 
<img src="display.php?image={translate($myvar,'&#32;&#13;&#9;&#10; '.'')}" text="foo" alt="foo"/>
