<xsl:sort select="borrower" order="descending"/> quest

is there a way to pass a variable into the select
 <xsl:sort select="borrower" order="descending"/> 

so that different values can be sorted in the xml?

 <xsl:for-each select="trades/trade">
       <xsl:sort select="borrower" order="descending"/>
