I'm sorry, I don't see how the numbers 12 and 32 are generated for paragraph1.... I'm guessing that 12 and 32 are start and end positions in the *output* file. If this is the case, I suggest you use XSLT for the output but not the table of contents; generate that after the contents are done with another technology, such as Perl or Python.
