In this case what is wrong is teh use of CDATA sections in the input. If you have control over that it would probably be better to have <file-content> <b>...</b>..</filecontent> not <file-content><![CDATA[ <b>...</b>..]]></filecontent> Then you could use <tr> <td> <xsl:copy-of select="//file-content"/> </td> </tr> and avoid all the problems with disable-output-escaping, and have a better guarantee of your result being well formed.
