Hi Ken,
Thanks! I got that to work. But... (there's always a "but").
I've lost my styles for the children of the toc container element, however all
of the grandchildren retained their styles. I'm tinkering with it, trying to
figure it out. Any idea why?

Try using modes, eg
<xsl:template match="toc/*" mode="toc">
...whatever...
</xsl:template>
<xsl:template match="toc/*" />
Then use <xsl:apply-templates select="//toc/*" mode="toc" /> for your table of
contents and <xsl:apply-templates select="*" /> for the body.
