This is a hack, and there is probably a better way to
do this but if it gets to the wire you could do
something like

<item><xsl:value-of select="item" /> </item>

    _/  _/_/    _/_/_/
   _/_/   _/ _/     _/
  _/               _/
 _/             _/
_/          _/_/_/_/
