Well, if there is no match for the match expression, the template would
never get called, so the plan would not work the way you have it.  You
will need to handle it at the place the nodes get selected, not where
the template match expression is.  Of course, you might have meant that
the z:row element exists but contains no data.  That is a different
matter.  If that is what you really meant, you should tell us.
