I looked at your problem, and while I dare say your code could be debugged, I'm sort of disinclined to do this since there's a far easier way. *If*, that is, your output, instead of a flat table structure (with depth indicated by indentation from spacer images), could be rendered as a nested structure of some kind, like <div><span>C item 1</span></div>
<div><span>O item 2</span>
<div><span>O item 2.1</span>
<div><span>C item 2.1.1</span></div>
<div><span>C item 2.1.2</span></div>
<div><span>C item 2.1.3</span></div>
</div>
</div>
<div><span>C item 3</span></div>
<div><span>C item 4</span></div>...which could format as nicely as the tables in HTML (in modern browsers). Is this an option for you?
