Con is quite right, I posted a butchered slither of my actual code.
Thanks for the solutions, they're clear, and I've got them working.
I'll now have to look at performance of the options!!!

No one has said anything about accessing a sorted node set.  Although I
no longer need to, I'm still wondering if this is possible.  Can anyone
advice on that?
