If you simply put your code for the @indent attribute (when it exists) in a separate template, a simple apply-templates will work: <xsl:template match="Text"> <xsl:apply-templates select="@indent"/> your stuff for Text here </xsl:template> <xsl:template match="@indent"> do your indent thing here </xsl:template> If the @indent attribute doesn't exist, no templates will be applied to it. Similarly, xsl:copy-of select="@indent" will fail to copy an indent attribute that doesn't exist. Cheers, Wendell
