RE: String manipulation & Line Breaks

"\n" would be LINE FEED in e.g. Java, but not in XML.

Well, this should work. Are you sure you don't have extra whitespace inside xsl:text? Anyhow, try

  <xsl:with-param name="from" select="'&#xA;'" />
