Thanks for that, ';' maybe essential but its not sufficient :-(

but I'm missing more and can't figure out what!

any other ideas, should I be in a particular directory for instance??

Windows uses a semicolon as separator in path variables.
Use
 set CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH;C:\xalan\bin\xalan.jar
etc. and everything should be ok.
