single-level break algorithm

Subject: single-level break algorithm

level break
Given the following xml

<student name="fred" score="90"/>
<student name="mary" score="90"/>
<student name="jane" score="87"/>
<student name="bob" score="85"/>

I want to output

90%
  fred
  mary
87 %
  jane
85%
  bob

I tried using the preceeding-sibling::node()/@score to retrieve the previous score of the student from within a foreach statement, but i always got a value of 1 from this statement. So obviously I didn't understand how to use it correctly. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions.

thanks,
jay
