really a space or just a literal no break space character that looks
like a space.
In the former case it's a bug in the system.

  latter to <td/>,

even if it's a real space <td> </td> shouldn't get written using />

  Finally, the META tag that it _always_ generates _never_ has a closing 
  tag, so it's essentially generating malformed XML.

It's only supposed to generate the meta tag in html outpuut method in
which case it should never have a closing tag as that would be an error.

  so it's essentially generating malformed XML.  

But the html output method doesn't generate xml at all and that's
correct html.
