[contains] wierd error with contains function

I am using contains to check whether a particular text appears in the xml
data, if so, flag it.

This is the funtion.

<xsl:if test="(contains(.,$watchFor))">
         <img src="../images/TSPGIF.gif"/>
</xsl:if>

This works without any problem except when $watchFor contains commas.

Thus
<xsl:if test="(contains(.,'xsllist'))">
         <img src="../images/TSPGIF.gif"/>
</xsl:if>
would work

but
<xsl:if test="(contains(.,'xsl,list'))">
         <img src="../images/TSPGIF.gif"/>
</xsl:if>
wont work. Is this just me or is there something that i am missing.

I am using xalan and xerces
