You missed Ken Holman's earlier post on the magic of document(''); give this a shot:

    xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">

  <xsl:output method="text" />

  <xsl:template match="/">
    <xsl:value-of select="document('')/xsl:stylesheet/xsl:output/@method" />
  </xsl:template>
</xsl:stylesheet>
