Mozilla will understand xhtml if you serve the file as text/xml. IE does not really handle xhtml at all. However if your stylesheet had what you said it had, namely <script ...> </script> then the result tree should not be linearised as <script.../> as the newline in the script content is significant, and the element is not empty. If your input really had <script ...></script> then it can be linearised using /> in the xml output method.
