stripping leading and trailing newlines from xml

Hello,

Is there a way to just strip leading and trailing newlines from xml using xsl or javascript? I used javascript, but of no use. The first step of storing multi-lined xml into a javascript string failed, complaining unterminated string constant. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
