Normally though you can arrange that the relative path to your common stylesheet is the same on both platforms. either by using something like symbolic links on the unix side or many XML parsers (especially java ones) allow you to specify entity resolvers so that you can map a specified URI to whatever file path you like it does not have to be the "obvious" mapping. I'm sure that xalan has that facility. Also since you seem to be using tomcat, you could use the uri remapping facilities in the server to map whatever uri works in windows to whatever real path you need on unix.
