<xsl:otherwise>
<xsl:variable name="teste" select="$um"/>
</xsl:otherwise>
the scope of a variable binding is the surrounding element so in that
case the scope ends at the /xsl:otherwise. So there is nowhere in the
rest of teh program that sees the new value.
