Ah, conceptual problem on my end. I actually need: select="$doca[name()=$varname]/following-sibling::*[1] at the point I'm doing the test, but that works, many thanks. I kept trying to find some way to use "following-sibling" as a prefix to the whole thing, thinking that you don't want to filter to the node matching the name, because then there isn't a following-sibling any more: of course there is; it's an orthogonal axis...
