You can't alter the value of $field.

  <xsl:choose>
    <xsl:when test="string($field)">
      <xsl:value-of select="translate($field, ',', '.')" />
    </xsl:when>
    <xsl:otherwise>NULL</xsl:otherwise>
  </xsl:choose>
</xsl:template>
