xml cdata escaping
   Very simply, I'm trying to do the following:

  <![CDATA[</i>]]>

  but the < and > are being escaped as &lt; and &gt;

The input <![CDATA[</i>]]> is identical to the input &lt;/i&gt; it is
just two ways of writing the same thing, just as
<x a="b"> is the same as <x      a  = 'b'  >
The XML parser does not report to XSLT which syntax appeared in the
input file.

Similarly the two forms are equivalent in the output.

If you are trying to generate an element node rather than the string
</i> then use the literal result element
<i>
... xsl instructions to generate th econtent of i
</i>
